Beth has had ample experience treating chemical dependence or addictions of various kinds along the full spectrum of care from inpatient to outpatient. Beth seeks to assist clients to gain both practical skills to combat urges and triggers, as well as gain insight into the underlying root causes of their addiction. Motivational interviewing techniques are used to help clients understand what exactly their addiction provides for them and what it costs them to ultimately gain insight into how life could be better without their addiction. Treating Depression

Illuminate Your Path to Joy and Fulfillment

One of the diagnoses that Beth has the most experience with treating is depression which could be major depressive disorder or persistent depressive disorder also known as dysthymia. In the case of major depressive disorder, the symptoms can be more severe but the depressive episode is usually shorter-term, lasting anywhere from two weeks to a few months. Beth’s approach to this type of depression uses a combination of exploring and uncovering the roots of the depression from this episode and past experiences with depression and then providing practical strategies or tools to combat the specific distressing symptoms that the client is experiencing. In this way, Beth has seen many clients overcome depressive episodes one step at a time by gradually changing their behaviors and their thoughts.

In the case of persistent depressive disorder, Beth’s approach is similar to her approach to major depressive disorder, however, she offers a deep understanding and compassion to the client due to the chronic nature of this type of depression. Strategies might differ slightly to allow the client to set the pacing for making gradual changes and focus on one small victory at a time.

Treating PTSD

Find Strength and Healing in the Aftermath of Trauma

Beth has significant experience working with individuals who suffer from PTSD including acute, complex, and chronic trauma. Beth worked in a specialized trauma program for approximately one year and had hands-on experience treating trauma through several modalities. Beth’s approach is to ensure that her clients first have a solid foundation in coping skills before beginning trauma work. Beth teaches a wide variety of skills drawing from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and other frameworks to ensure that clients have an arsenal of skills at their disposal that cultivate feelings of safety and competence in themselves.

After ensuring that clients have a solid foundation in coping skills, Beth generally utilizes one of two different approaches to treating trauma. One, in the case of single or simple trauma, Beth utilizes a psychodynamic exposure therapy approach where patients are encouraged to retell their trauma narrative and seek to find recurrent themes and beliefs in their narrative with therapeutic aid. The second approach is more often utilized in the case of complex childhood or prolonged trauma, and most closely resembles an Internal Family Systems model. This involves processing daily or weekly triggers and applying coping skills that cultivate a sense of personal safety as well as exploring personal identity, self-care, and healthy unification of all parts of the self.
